Opening Question:   What is your name & what creature on our planet do you believe is the most humble, submissive and natural to following leadership or it’s creator?

Verse 1.)  Matthew 8:23-27

Preface: Jesus with His disciples were aboard a boat to cross the Sea of Galilee.

23  Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. Without warning, a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!”

Questions:

  • 1.)  Why did Jesus rebuke them?
  • 2.)  What was their alternative in this time of need besides waking Jesus in a faithless panic? (faithful prayer)
  • 3.)  What are some instances where we can be tempted to bypass faith in God’s plan and try to take matters into our own hands?
    • (A: All point to not following God’s plan of faith )

Verse 2.)   Sam 6:3-7

Preface:  King David was transporting the Ark of the Covenant from [ba-lay] Baalah to Jerusalem. There were very specific instructions given how only the Levite men were to carry the Ark on poles and what needed to be done in order to even touch it.

v3 They set the Ark of God on a new cart and brought it from the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill. Uzzah and [Ack’he’O] Ahio, sons of Abinadab, were guiding the new cart  with the ark of God on it, and Ahio was walking in front of it.  David and the whole house of Israel were celebrating with all their might before the Lord , with songs and with harps, lyres, tambourines, sistrums and cymbals. When they came to the threshing floor of [Na’Ckown] Nacon, Uzzah reached out and took hold of the Ark of God, because the oxen stumbled.  The Lord ‘s anger burned against Uzzah because of his irreverent act; therefore God struck him down and he died there beside the Ark of God.

  • 1.)  Why do you think God considered the act of touching the Ark “Irreverent?”
  • 2.)  What is an instance in your life, where a good intention still resulted in a bad outcome?
  • 3.)  What are some things our society doesn’t take very seriously that God does? (aka, we aren’t following God’s ethics)

Verse 3.)   John 14:15 & then 15:10-12

v15  “If you love me, you will obey what I command.”

then;

v10    “If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father’s commands and remain in his love.
I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. My command is this: Love each other
as I have loved you. “

  • 1.)  How do you personally build friendships with people?
  • 2.)  How did Jesus build His friendships?  What did he do daily?
  • 3.)  What is one thing in your character that we can do to help promote the tight family group mentality Jesus promoted with His inner circle?

Challenge:  Well, I always like to end each discussion group with a challenge.  That challenge is, let’s do our best to build family with one another in like manner to the believers in the first century. This requires we follow their example. I believe Jesus set this standard to be imitated for all time. They had daily contact reading, praying, and fellowshipping  together.  Let’s do the same following Jesus so we can be family, until the end!
