Bible Talk

Topic: Love

Lesson Name: Are you a slave or a servant?

____________________________________________________________

Opening Question:   Going around (this way) please state your name and tell us, what was your favorite pet like?

Preface: John the Baptist, [Jesus’ cousin ] was preaching in the desert to very large crowds warning the Jews that prophecies of the messiah are soon to be fulfilled. One of the things he focused on also, was their character issues.:

Verse #1:      Luke 3:9

“The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.” [10]  “What should we do then?” the crowd asked. [11] John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.”

  • Q1   Why would John suggest that draw a parallel between a tree baring good fruit and a human sharing possessions?
  • Q2   What makes this difficult in America?
  • Q3   How can we as a movement of believers change the culture around us?

Note: Hebrews    13:2 —–“ Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unaware.”

Verse#2:       Romans 12:10

“Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.”

  • Q1   What does or did loving that pet look like?
  • Q2:  Tell me about a time you honoring your pet above yourself?
  • Q3:   What is something you find yourself struggling to do with people you would easily do with a pet?

Verse #3:      Galatians 1:10

“Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.”

  • Q1  [ Pointed Question] So based on this scripture Paul’s actions are directed toward please whom? [God]
  •  Q2   So….If Paul parallels people pleasing to NOT serving Christ, but what is the difference between people pleasing and  serving people?
  • Q3  How can you personally grow in serving your brothers and sisters without an obligated heart vs. a joyful one?

Note: Galatians 5:14—–   ” For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

Challenge: I like to end each Bible Talk with a challenge. This weeks’ is simple, Mark 10:45 states: “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”  Servant’s serve willingly, where as a slave serves more out of obligation. No matter if you are here to see if the Bible is right for you, are already studying the Bible or are a committed believer, speak with the person who invited you out and discuss now during our fellowship time how YOU can personally become a better servant.

And That is Bible talk……
